单词 john q
释义

John Q.n.

Brit. /ˌdʒɒn ˈkjuː/, U.S. /ˌdʒɑn ˈkju/
Origin: From a proper name, combined with English elements. Etymons: proper name John , English Q. , public n.
Etymology: Originally (in John Q. Public ) < the male forename John (see John n. 1) + Q. (presented as a middle initial) + public n., apparently as an alteration of earlier John Public, used as a name for a hypothetical ordinary member of the public. Compare later Joe Public n. at Joe n.2 Additions.Compare the following slightly earlier examples of John Public in a similar sense:1919 Bridgeport (Connecticut) Telegram 1 Dec. 6/7 When the time comes to dig down into the old pocket, John Public is sent eight dozen telegrams.1920 Salt LakeTelegram 27 July 7/1 John Public can't buy anything with a penny any more, not even at a bargain rush, yet the mint cannot keep up with the demand.Compare the name of John Q. Public, a popular comic-strip character representing the ordinary American taxpayer created by Vaughn Richard Shoemaker (1902–91), U.S. political cartoonist, who worked at the Chicago Daily News from 1922. Shoemaker claimed in an interview to have chosen Q. as the middle initial of his character on advice it was the least commonly recorded; however, since evidence for use of the expression is found elsewhere in 1922, it is unclear whether the name originated with Shoemaker.
U.S. colloquial.
