单词 jews ear
释义

Jew's earn.

Brit. /ˈdʒuːz ɪə/, U.S. /ˈdʒuz ˌɪ(ə)r/
Forms: 1500s–1600s Iewes eare, 1600s–1800s Jews ear, 1600s– Jew's ear.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; probably modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Jew n., ear n.1
Etymology: < the genitive of Jew n. + ear n.1, probably as a mistaken rendering of post-classical Latin auricula Judae Judas's ear (although this is apparently first attested later: 1576 or earlier). The fungus is so called on account of its shape, and on account of the fact that it is frequently found on the elder, on which Judas Iscariot was reputed to have hanged himself. Compare Judas's ear n. at Judas n. Compounds 2b.
1. More fully Jew's ear fungus. Any of several cup or ear-shaped fungi; spec. (a) a jelly fungus, Auricularia auricula-judae (family Auriculariaceae), which grows on the roots and trunks of trees and has a reddish-brown, wrinkled fruiting body used medicinally and as a source of food; (b) (English regional) †any of several cup fungi of the genus Peziza (family Pezizaceae) (obsolete). A. auricula-judae is also called Judas's ear.
