Etymology: < private adj.1 + member n.
A member of a legislative body, now esp. the House of Commons in the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries, who does not hold government office. (In quot. 1606: a person who is not a member of the Privy Council.) In the British House of Commons, members of the Opposition front bench, while not holding government office, are not generally regarded as private members.
