Origin: A borrowing from Chinese. Etymon: Chinese gāai-fōng.

Etymology: < Chinese (Cantonese) gāai-fōng neighbourhood, neighbour ( < gāai street + fōng lane). With kaifong welfare association compare Chinese (Cantonese) gāai-fōng fūkleihwúi, lit. ‘neighbourhood welfare association’, probably after English.The initial consonant of the Cantonese word, though transliterated as g, is pronounced as an unaspirated voiceless velar stop closer to English k.
