Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French nostalgie de la boue.
Etymology: < French nostalgie de la boue, lit. ‘yearning for mud’ (Émile Augier Le mariage d'Olympe (1855) i. i) < nostalgie nostalgia n. + de la , partitive article ( < de de prep. + la , feminine definite article: see La adj.) + boue mud (1161 in Old French as boe; 1121 in emboer to coat or smear with mud) < a Gaulish word cognate with Welsh baw mud, mire, dirt (13th cent.; 12th cent. in a place name; also 13th cent. as adjective in sense ‘filthy’), of unknown origin.
A longing for sexual or social degradation; a desire to regress to more primitive social conditions or behaviour than those to which a person is accustomed. Also in extended use.
