Origin: A borrowing from Urdu. Etymon: Urdu janjāl.
Etymology: < Urdu janjāl, perhaps a colloquial pronunciation of jazāʼil ( < Persian jazāʼil jezail n.), perhaps influenced by Hindi jañjāl encumbrance (with other formal similarities also suggesting that these words may have been associated with each other).

1. A heavy firearm or field gun with a long barrel, suitable for firing with the barrel resting on a person's shoulder or mounted on a swivel, either in a static location or on a vehicle.This type of firearm was widely used in China and India in the 19th cent.
