Etymology: Japanese, < ip ( < ichi) one + pon, hon numerical counter for something long, as a staff, sword, baton, etc. Ippon was originally used as a judge's call at a contest of swordsmanship, implying ‘a clean strike worth one point’, and was later applied similarly in other branches of traditional military art, as judo, karate, etc.
