Etymology: < German isoleucin (F. Ehrlich 1903, in Zeitschr. Ver. d. Deut. Zucker-Ind. LIII. 821), < iso- iso- comb. form 2 + leucin leucine n.
Biochemistry.
An amino-acid of which the dextrorotatory or L- form is an essential nutrient and a general constituent of proteins; 1-amino-2-methylvaleric acid, CH3CH2CH(CH3)CH(NH2)COOH.

1936 Jrnl. Biol. Chem. 114 89 Leucine and isoleucine have been isolated in considerable quantities by extracting the dried, defatted mycelium of Aspergillus syndowi with acetone.
