Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French artillier.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French artillier maker of bows and arrows (1260 in Old French) < artillier (see artillery n.) + -ier -ier suffix; compare -er suffix2. Compare post-classical Latin artillarius maker or supervisor of artillery (from 1382 in British sources), and also Catalan artiller (14th cent.), Spanish artillero (14th cent.), Portuguese artilheiro (a1536 as artelheiro ), Italian †artegliero , †artigliero (1598 in Florio), artigliere (a1571 in this sense, 1619 in sense ‘artillery officer’). Compare slightly later artillour n.On use in Middle English in the sense ‘arms, weaponry’ see discussion at artillery n.
