Etymology: < German Abraumsalz (1861 or earlier in plural Abraumsalze , originally and chiefly with reference to such salts found at Stassfurt), literally ‘salts to be removed’ (so named because they were formerly considered useless; < Abraum overburden (second half of the 15th cent.), specific use (in mining terminology) of Abraum refuse, trash, literally ‘objects which need to be taken away’ (1399 as aberüm ; < abraumen to take away, clear out (now abräumen ; Middle High German abraumen ) < ab- (see of prep.) + raumen (now räumen ) to empty, to vacate: see rime v.²) + Salz salt n.¹), with substitution of salt n.¹ for the second element.
