单词 abraum
释义

abraumn.

Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: auburn adj.
Etymology: Probably < auburn adj. (compare forms at that entry, and also earlier Abram adj.), the clay being so named on account of its colour.Although the source of quot. 1753 says that the clay is also found in Germany and Italy, a derivation < German Abraum refuse, trash, overburden (see abraum salt n.) seems unlikely on semantic grounds.
Obsolete. rare.
= red ochre n. Cf. ruddle n.1
