† Arthur's hufen.Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Arthur, an element of uncertain origin. Etymology: < the genitive of the name of King Arthur (see Arthurian adj.) + a second element of uncertain origin; the name of the constellation probably shows an extended use of the name of a round building which formerly stood near Carron in Stirlingshire, in which the second element may perhaps arise from either a misapprehension or a misreading of a variant of oven n. (see forms at that entry).Compare the following references to the Stirlingshire building:c1377 J. Fordun Scoti-chron. (1759) I. ii. xvi. 51 Quam cum Arthurus rex..recreandi gratiâ invisere soleret, a plebeis propterea Arthuris Hove dicebatur.1535 W. Stewart tr. H. Boethius Bk. Cron. Scotl. Scotl. xiv. vii. f. 209/1 The inhabitantis..put the Romane..superstitionis out of ye wallis thairof. And ingrauit the armis of king Arthoure, and commandit it to be callit Arthouris hoif. The following suggest that the original name of this building was Arthur's Oon (or Arthur's Oven ; in quot. 1292 rendered in Latin as furnus Arthuri):1292 in C. Innes Reg. S.
