Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French artre.
Etymology: < Middle French, French †artre, denoting any of various insects or larvae which eat wood, fabrics, etc. (1562), related to Old Occitan arta , arda (14th cent.) and to Middle French, French artison (c1100 in Old French as artoizon ) in similar senses; further etymology uncertain and disputed (compare Französisches etymol. Wörterbuch at tarmes, Trésor de la langue française at artison). Compare art-worm n.
Obsolete. rare.
