Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin inclināt- , inclināre , -orium suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin inclināt-, past participial stem of inclināre incline v. + -orium suffix, after French inclinatoire (1799 in this sense, in the passage translated in quot. 1801; 1650 or earlier denoting an instrument used for measuring the slope of a wall).
rare (historical in later use).
A dipping compass; a dipping needle. Cf. inclination n. 9b.
