Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin in partibus infidelium.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin in partibus infidelium in the regions of the unfaithful, in countries inhabited by unbelievers (1559 or earlier) < classical Latin in in prep. + partibus , ablative plural of pars part n.1 + infīdēlium , genitive plural of infīdēlis infidel n. Compare earlier in partibus adj.
Now historical.
Used postpositively, chiefly designating a Roman Catholic bishop, archbishop, etc.: appointed to a see that is effectively defunct (esp. in territories in the Middle East, North Africa, etc., which were formerly under Christian control), and thereby holding the rank of bishop while having no obligation to live in or attend to a diocese (see in partibus adj.). Also: located or resident in a non-Christian country or region. Most bishops in partibus served as auxiliary bishops in a diocese in a Christian country. The term was abolished in the late 19th cent. in favour of the term titular bishop (see titular bishop n. at titular n. and adj. Compounds).
