单词 | in nomine |
释义 | in nominen. Music. Now chiefly historical. A piece of polyphonic music, typically composed in an imitative style, which incorporates and reworks melodic material, in particular the chant Gloria tibi trinitas in long note-values, from the passage setting the words ‘in nomine Domini’ in the Benedictus of John Taverner's Missa Gloria Tibi Trinitas.Taverner's Mass setting was composed in the early 16th cent., and its setting of the words ‘in nomine domini’ from the Benedictus gave rise to a number of arrangements, both vocal and instrumental, and also to many new compositions using the same chant. Most of them were for instrumental ensemble or for keyboard instruments, although a few incorporated vocal parts. (A very small number of works called ‘In nomine’, however, were not based on this chant.) The genre flourished in the late 16th and early 17th cent., and was revived by a few composers in the 20th cent.Used chiefly in England of English works.
