Etymology: < Anglo-Norman aruser, Anglo-Norman and Middle French arouser, Middle French arrouser (French arroser ) to sprinkle with water or another liquid (first half of the 12th cent. in Old French as aroser ), to soak (something) (late 12th cent. or earlier), to make wet or moist (13th cent.) < an unattested post-classical Latin form *arrosare , alteration (after the nominative form classical Latin rōs : see below) of post-classical Latin adrorare to besprinkle (5th cent.; 9th cent. as arrorare ) < classical Latin ad- ad- prefix + rōr- , rōs dew (see rore n.).Compare Old Occitan arosar, arrosar (12th cent. in an isolated attestation as past participle arosat, subsequently from 13th cent.), Spanish †arosar (early 15th cent.), Italian arrosare (13th cent.).
