Mineralogy.
A black or dark blue secondary molybdenum mineral, perhaps a hydrated oxide of molybdenum, Mo3O8.nH2O, which occurs as earthy masses or crusts and as a blue stain and dissolves in water to give a blue solution.

1871 Jrnl. Chem. Soc. 24 1173 Ilsemannite... The author gives this name to native molybdic molybdate, MoO2.4MoO3, occurring at Bleiberg in Carinthia, as a bluish-black to black, mostly earthy or cryptocrystalline deposit, between groups of crystals of barium sulphate.
