Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: English baffle; English bach, bauch.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Probably ultimately related to bauchle n. Perhaps (i) shortened < Scots (chiefly southern) baffle, in the same sense (although this is first attested later: second half of the 20th cent.), variant of bauchle n., or perhaps (ii) a variant of Scots (chiefly southern) bach (also bauch), in the same sense (although this is also first attested later: second half of the 20th cent.), shortened < bauchle n. In both cases perhaps further influenced by baff v.2, from the notion of slippers scuffing the ground. For the development of /f/ from earlier /x/ in Scots compare forms at e.g. argh adj., waugh adj.
