Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French ignominieux; Latin ignōminiōsus.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French ignominieux (a1429; French ignominieux ), or its etymon (ii) classical Latin ignōminiōsus covered with ignominy, disgraced, involving shame, disgraceful < ignōminia ignominy n. + -ōsus -ous suffix.Compare Spanish ignominioso (late 15th cent.), Portuguese ignominioso (a1515), Italian ignominioso (14th cent.).
