Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin ignōbilitās.
Etymology: < classical Latin ignōbilitās condition of being unknown, obscurity, humble origin, in post-classical Latin also dishonourableness, meanness or baseness of character (5th or 6th cent.; from 8th cent. in British sources) < ignōbilis ignoble adj. + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare nobility n.Compare Middle French ignobleté, innobilité, Middle French French ignobilité low rank or status (late 14th cent.), Italian ignobilità (beginning of the 14th cent.).
1. Chiefly with the. People who are not of noble birth or rank considered collectively; (also) people of ignoble character. Now rare.In later use often as an ad hoc formation used in explicit contrast to nobility (see nobility n. 7a).
