Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Virginia Algonquian. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Virginia Algonquian assapanick, French assapan.
Etymology: In α. forms < Virginia Algonquian assapanick (1612), cognate with or similarly formed to Nanticoke ah!sappaneques (with further diminutive suffix) < the base of Narragansett ashòp net + the base of Narragansett anéqus squirrel. In β. forms apparently < French assapan (Cuvier 1819: see note), shortened < †assapanick ( < English), quoted by Buffon (compare quot. 1780) from a French work of 1640, which in turn closely paraphrases the English work cited in quot. 1612. Compare flying squirrel n.French assapan is apparently not used in Cuvier's Règne animal (1817), but it appears two years later in the caption of a plate relating to his work, and is subsequently used by him in Mém. du Muséum d'histoire naturelle 10 (1823) 125.

Either of the two North American species of flying squirrel, Glaucomys sabrinus and G. volans (family Sciuridae).In α. forms not fully naturalized in English.

Cuvier has subdivided this group into the Taguans (Pteromys), and Assapans (Sciuropterus), which latter term he applies to the smaller species.1875 J. G. Wood Trespassers 299 Other Taguans and Assapans belong to the genus sciuropterus, or winged squirrels.1905 J. D. Champlin & F. A. Lucas Young Folk's Cycl. Nat.
