Etymology: < French idéologue (c1800 in sense 1, 1846 or earlier in sense 2 (now rare in this sense)) < idéo- ideo- comb. form +-logue -logue comb. form, after idéologie ideology n. Compare German Ideologe (see ideologist n.). Compare earlier ideologist n.On the variation in form see note at ideo- comb. form.
