单词 ideologist
释义

ideologistn.

Brit. /ˌʌɪdɪˈɒlədʒɪst/, /ˌɪdɪˈɒlədʒɪst/, U.S. /ˌɪdiˈɑlədʒəst/, /ˌaɪdiˈɑlədʒəst/
Forms: see ideo- comb. form and -logist comb. form.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: ideo- comb. form, -logist comb. form.
Etymology: < ideo- comb. form + -logist comb. form. In sense 1 after French idéologiste (1796; sense 3 is apparently not paralleled in French before the 20th cent., and the more usual French word, in all senses, is idéologue ideologue n., which is first attested slightly later). In sense 2 after either French idéologue ideologue n. or perhaps its rarer synonym idéologiste (both c1800 in this sense, used pejoratively). In sense 3 after German Ideologe (1848 (in the compound Bourgeoisideologe ‘bourgeois ideologist’, in the passage translated in quot. 1888) or earlier in this sense; 1843 (in a journal article by Marx) or earlier in sense ‘impractical theorist, speculator’). Compare later ideologue n.
1. A student of ideas, or of the mental processes involved in forming ideas; spec. an adherent of the system of the French philosopher Étienne Condillac (1715–80), according to which all ideas are derived from sensations.
