Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Icenī.
Etymology: < classical Latin Icenī, the name of an ancient British people inhabiting northern East Anglia (see definition); of unknown origin. Compare Icenian n.In form Eceni probably with reference to the legend ecen and ece on pre-Roman coins of the same region, which is usually taken to represent a British form of the name of the Iceni.

An ancient British people inhabiting an area of northern East Anglia (including present-day Norfolk and adjoining parts of Suffolk, Huntingdonshire, and Cambridgeshire) from the 1st cent. b.c. to the 1st cent. a.d.The queen of the Iceni, Boudicca, led an unsuccessful rebellion against the Romans after the death of her husband Prasutagus in a.d. 60.
