Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin hysteriformis, hysteriiformis.
Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < scientific Latin hysteriformis (1803 or earlier) < Hysterium , genus name ( H. J. Tode 1784, in Schriften der Berlinischen Gesellschaft naturforschender Freunde 5 53; < ancient Greek ὑστέρα uterus (see hystero- comb. form2) + scientific Latin -ium : see -y suffix4, apparently so called on account of the shape of the sporocarp, although this resembles the vulva more than the womb) + classical Latin -formis -form comb. form2; and partly (in β. forms) < scientific Latin hysteriiformis (1825 or earlier), alteration of hysteriformis, after Hysterium.
Mycology.
Resembling (that of) the genus Hysterium of ascomycete fungi; spec. designating a sporocarp that is elongated and narrowly cleft; characteristic of such a sporocarp.
