Etymology: Middle English, < Old French idro- , ydropisie (12th cent.), = Spanish hidropesía , Italian idropesia , medieval Latin (h)ydrōpisīa (ydropicia in Simon Januensis, c1300) for Latin hydrōpisis (Pliny), < Greek *ὑδρώπισις , < ὕδρωψ , ὑδρωπ- , hydrops n. Formerly stressed hyˈdropesie , hyˈdropsy (not yet obsolete) whence the aphetic dropesie , dropsy n. and adj., found from the first appearance of the word in English, and perhaps due in part to coalescence of the initial short vowel with the in þe ydropesie, th' idropesie, the dropesie.
