roanadj.n.4

Brit. /rəʊn/, U.S. /roʊn/
Forms: 1500s roen, 1500s roone, 1500s–1600s roane, 1500s–1600s rone, 1500s– roan, 1700s rhoan; English regional 1800s– rooan (northern), 1900s– roon (Worcestershire); also Scottish pre-1700 roweing, pre-1700 ruan.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French roan.
Etymology: < Middle French roan, rouen (French rouan ), probably < Spanish roano , originally denoting red or reddish colour mixes (mid 12th cent. as roan ; compare post-classical Latin rodano (899), raudano (979; both in Spanish sources), of uncertain origin, probably < Gothic *raud- , stem of rauþs red adj. Compare Old Occitan rauane (11th cent.), Portuguese ruão (11th cent. as roudane , raudam ), and also ( < Spanish) Italian roano (beginning of the 16th cent. or earlier). Compare earlier roaned adj.An alternative derivation < an unattested post-classical Latin form *ravidanus < classical Latin ravus kind of mixed colour + -idus -id suffix1 + -ānus -an suffix (discussed in Französisches etymol. Wörterbuch at ravidus) poses semantic and phonological problems and is rejected in J. Corominas Diccionario crítico etimológico castellano e hispánico (1983) at roano. In senses A. 2 and B. 2 apparently partly (especially in later use) influenced by roan n.2 2, on account of the fact that Rouen cloth was frequently dyed in shades of red. Perhaps compare Dutch †roaensch variegated, multicoloured, also (of dyed cloth) ‘dark red’ (1599 in Kiliaan as two separate entries), Middle Low German rowansk (of dyed cloth) dark red, both apparently < either Middle French roan , rouen (as above) or a form of the name of Rouen (attested in Middle Low German as Rowān : see Rowan n.2) + the respective equivalents of -ish suffix1.
A. adj.
1.
a. Of a horse: having a coat in which the prevailing colour (usually bay, sorrel, or chestnut) is thickly interspersed with white or grey, typically producing a dull red or reddish-grey. Also (and in earliest use) designating the overall colour itself.
