Etymology: < classical Latin idiōta idiot n.Quot. ?1548 at sense 1 occurs in the context of a satirical attack on Roman Catholic clergymen, parodying a priest's use of Latin; it is unclear whether this instance is to be regarded as showing the Latin or the English noun (the rhyming words wota , nota , pota , grota represent humorous alterations of wot v., note v.2, pot n.1, groat n., respectively, after Latin words ending in -a).
