Etymology: Apparently an alteration of trinket n.1, after Spanish -illo or Italian -illo , diminutive suffixes (see -illa suffix), probably with allusion to (Tom) Trinkilo (also spelt Trinkillo, Trincalo, Trinculo), a common name for comic characters in 17th-cent. English literature, including that of an artful cozener in Brathwait's satirical poem An Age for Apes (written ?c1632).Perhaps compare also Middle French tryncle (1474 in an apparently isolated attestation: see trinket n.1).
Obsolete rare.
Apparently perversion of trinket n.1, simulating a Spanish or Italian form.
