Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Vlach, combined with an English element. Etymons: Aromani n., -an suffix; Vlach Aromâni , -an suffix.
Etymology: < Aromani n. or its etymon Vlach (Aromanian) Aromâni, Aromîni, self-designation (see Aromani n.) + -an suffix (compare -ian suffix), after Romanian n. (compare forms at that entry). Compare German Aromunen (plural noun), denoting the people ( G. Weigand Die Aromunen II. (1894); < Vlach (Aromanian) Aromâni , Aromîni , self-designation, probably via modern Greek Αρωμούνοι ) and also German Aromunisch , denoting the language (1904 or earlier). Compare Aromani n. and earlier Vlach n.
1. A Balkan Romance language closely related to Romanian and spoken in parts of northern Greece, Albania, Macedonia, and Bulgaria; = Macedo-Romanian n. at Macedo- comb. form 2.
