Origin: A word inherited from Germanic. Etymons: house n.1, stead n.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old Frisian hūsstede , Middle Dutch huusstede (Dutch huisstede , huissteed , huisstee ), Old Saxon hūsstedi (Middle Low German hūsstede , hūse stad , (with shortening of the vowel in the first syllable) hustede , hustidde ), Old High German hūsstat (early modern German hausstatt , hausstette (17th cent.)) < the Germanic base of house n.1 + the Germanic base of stead n. In later use apparently independently re-formed < house n.1 + stead n., probably after homestead n.Also attested in place names, as la Houstede, Wiltshire (1281; now Hursted Farm), Lethenardishustudes (field name), Macclesfield, Cheshire (1290), le houstude (field name), Hurdsfield, Cheshire (1323), etc.
A place or piece of ground on which a house stands; the site of a house. Also: the house, and sometimes the adjacent outbuildings, occupying this. Cf. homestead n. 2.Apparently unattested between the Old English period and the late 17th cent.
