单词 pace tanti viri dixerim
释义

pace tanti viri dixerimphr.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pace tanti viri dixerim.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pace tanti viri dixerim if I might speak with due deference to such a great man (c400 in pseudo-Augustine Principia Rhetorices) < classical Latin pāce (see pace prep.) + tantī , genitive of tantus so great (see tanti adj.) + virī , genitive of vir man (see virile adj.) + dīxerim , 1st person perfect subjunctive of dīcere to speak, say (see dictum n.).The post-classical Latin phrase adapts classical Latin phrases such as pace horum dixerim if I might speak with due deference to these people, pace magistri dixerim if I might speak with due deference to the master (both in Cicero). After its occurrence in the Principia Rhetorices it is rare until the 17th cent.
