hushtadj.

/hʌʃt/
Forms: Also Middle English hussht, hushte, hoscht, 1500s whusht, 1600s whoosht. See also hushed adj.
Etymology: In 15th cent. texts, hussht , hushte , varies with hust adj., huyst , and whist adj.1, derived from the corresponding interjectional forms, to express the state which these enjoin or produce. As an adjective, husht gave rise to a verb and noun of the same form; but it appears to have been at length felt as a past participle, as if hush-t , from which feeling there arose a new verb hush v.1; under the influence of this, the original adjective itself passed into the past participle hush'd , hushed adj., of which it is now treated as a variant spelling.
archaic.
Silent, still, quiet; later, Reduced to silence, rendered silent.
