1949 A. Chujoy Dance Encycl. 511/1 Wilis (or Willis), in Western-Slavic and Eastern-German legends, the spirits of betrothed girls who have died as a result of being jilted by faithless lovers. They came out to dance at night and led the faithless ones to their death by making them dance until they fell dead of exhaustion.
