Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: horse n., nail n.
Etymology: < horse n. + nail n.Attested earlier as a surname, e.g. Henry Horshenail (1221), Willelmum Horsnaill' (1237), Adam Horsnail (1333), etc.; now frequently Horsnell, Horsnall. Although it has sometimes been suggested that this surname was a nickname for a farrier, it is more likely that it was applied to a small person with a large head. Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈhorse-nail.
