Etymology: < post-classical Latin amativus (from 13th cent. in British and continental sources) < classical Latin amāt- , past participial stem of amāre to love (see amant n.) + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare earlier amatory adj. and amorous adj.Compare Middle French amatif (1505), Old Occitan amatiu (c1350), Spanish amativo (c1400), Portuguese amativo (1573).
