Etymology: < ancient Greek ἁπλοῦς (with reference to the simplicity of its composition: see haplo- comb. form) + -ite suffix¹, after German Aplit (1803 or earlier), itself after either Swedish aplit or post-classical Latin aplites ( A. J. Retzius Försök til mineral-rikets upställning (1795) 252).

Geology.

An igneous rock with a homogeneous fine- or medium-grained texture consisting predominantly of alkaline feldspar and quartz, typically pale in colour and most commonly found in dykes and veins in association with granite.
