Origin: A borrowing from Hungarian. Etymon: Hungarian honvéd.
Etymology: < Hungarian honvéd patriotic soldier, militant (1821), member of the Hungarian army, initially of the army of the autonomous government as opposed to the Austro-Hungarian army (1848, now historical and archaic) < hon home land, home + véd to defend, protect.With use with reference to the Hungarian military and its members collectively, compare Hungarian honvédség. With reference to the military of other countries, Hungarian uses the more general words katona soldier, and katonaság army, military.
Now chiefly historical.
Originally: Hungarian volunteers, and subsequently all Hungarian troops, during the revolutionary war of 1848–9. Later: the Hungarian second-line formation within the Austrian army (1868–1918); (also) the Hungarian army (1920–48). Also: a member of any of these military forces, (now) spec. a private in the Hungarian army.Recorded earliest in attributive use.
