Forms: Middle English– archangel, Middle English archangell(e, Middle English arc, Middle English–1500s ark-awngell, arkangel.
Etymology: < Old French archangel, -ele, -le, or perhaps < Latin archangelus , < Greek ἀρχάγγελος (see arch- prefix and angel n.): the Old English translation héah-ęngel survived to 1200. On account of the following a, the prefix in this word remained hard (arc-, ark-) in all the Romance languages: Gothic had arkaggilus; in English, early spellings occur with arc-, ark-. No satisfactory explanation known of the transferred senses.
