Etymology: < scientific Latin Archaeocyathidae, family name (1866 or earlier) < Archaeocyathus , genus name (E. Billings 1861, in New Species Lower Silurian Fossils I. 1; < archaeo- archaeo- comb. form + classical Latin cyathus wine-cup: see cyathus n.) + -idae (see -id suffix3).

Any of a large and diverse group ( Archaeocyatha) of fossil sponges of the Lower Cambrian, the members of which had a calcareous skeleton, typically in the shape of a double-walled cone, and were the earliest known reef-building organisms.
