Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: hog n.1, fish n.1
Etymology: < hog n.1 + fish n.1, on account of the animals denoted resembling pigs in some way. In sense 1a after Kongo mbíji a ngulu, specific use of mbíji a ngulu pork ( < mbíji , mbízi animal whose flesh is eaten for food, uncooked meat + a , possessive marker + ngulu pig). In sense 1b probably after either porpoise n. (compare δ. forms at porpoise n.) or one of the related forms in Romance languages. Compare also mereswine n. and its Germanic cognates, and also sea-hog n., sea-swine n., and swine-fish (in quot. 1611 at sense 1b).
