Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: hippo- comb. form, -phagy comb. form.
Etymology: < hippo- comb. form + -phagy comb. form, after Hellenistic Greek ἱπποϕάγοι (plural), lit. ‘horse eaters’, name of a Scythian tribe.Compare French hippophagie (1832). Compare the following earlier example of hippophagi (plural) in an English context:1607 E. Topsell Hist. Foure-footed Beastes 331 There were certaine people in Scythia, which were called Hippophagi, because they liued vpon horsse-flesh.
