Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: hippo- comb. form, -mania comb. form.
Etymology: < hippo- comb. form + -mania comb. form.In sense 1 probably after ancient Greek ἱππομανεῖν (of mares) to be in heat (Aristotle); compare earlier nymphomania n. and (rare) hippomanical of or relating to mares in heat (1652). In sense 2 after Hellenistic Greek ἱππομανία excessive fondness for horses; compare post-classical Latin hippomania (1617 or earlier; rare) and Middle French, French hippomanie (1588 or earlier), in the same sense.
1. A surge of sexual excitement experienced by a mare in heat; (hence in extended use) powerful or excessive sexual desire in a woman. Cf. hippomaniac adj. 1. Obsolete. rare.
