单词 shelta
释义

Sheltan.adj.

Brit. /ˈʃɛltə/, U.S. /ˈʃɛltə/
Forms: 1800s shelter, 1800s– shelta, 1900s shelru, 1900s– sheldru (rare). Also with lower-case initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Shelta. Etymon: Shelta Sheldrū.
Etymology: < Shelta Sheldrū, of uncertain origin, perhaps ultimately an alteration of Irish béarla speech (Early Irish bélrae , bélrad ; < bél mouth (of uncertain origin) + rád speech, act of speaking, verbal noun of ráidid speaks: see read v.).A relationship with Irish lucht-siúl travellers, literally ‘walking people’, has also been suggested, but this is unlikely, as this expression is not typically used to denote the Travellers as a community. Compare the following, which lists more forms of the language name, although some of these may be intended to show the Shelta etymon (especially those using special characters):1891 Sampson in Jrnl. Gypsy Lore Soc. II. 206 Like all true citizens of the road, the tinkers protect themselves by the use of a secret language, variously known as Shelta, Sheldrū, Shīldru, Shelter, and Shelteroχ, ‘Bog Latin’, ‘Tinkers' Cant’, or ‘the Ould Thing’.
A. n.
