Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin hippomachia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin hippomachia (a1519 or earlier) < ancient Greek ἱππομαχία fight on horseback, cavalry action < ἱππο- hippo- comb. form + -μαχία -machy comb. form.
Now rare.
A fight or conflict on horseback; spec. (a) a joust or tournament (obsolete); (b) Ancient Greek History a cavalry charge or battle.In quot. 1863 used humorously to refer to a horse race or race meeting.
