Now somewhat rare.
A hippogriff (hippogriff n. 1).In quot. 1798 used allusively, with reference to the beast's supposed wildness or uncontrollabilty, to refer to Ariosto's Orlando Furioso; cf. hippogriff n. 2 and the note at sense 1 of that entry.In quot. 1848 used to translate a reference to a hippalektryon (hippalektryon n.) in Ancient Greek.
