Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < post-classical Latin hippogriphus, hippogryphus (1581 or earlier); partly (in γ. forms) < French hippogriffe (1556in Middle French as hippogrife); and partly (in β. forms) < their etymon Italian ippogrifo (1516 as hippogrypho in Ariosto) < ancient Greek ἵππος horse (see hippo- comb. form) + Italian grifo (see griffin n.1). 1. A mythical creature with the body and hind legs of a horse, the head and wings of an eagle or griffin, and feathered and taloned forelegs. The mating of griffins with mares is mentioned—as an improbable or impossible occurrence—in Virgil's Eclogues ( viii. 27). While depictions of beasts with the foreparts of an eagle and the hindquarters of a horse are occasionally found in classical and medieval art, a hippogriff is first described and named in Ariosto's Orlando Furioso (1516), where (though difficult to control) it is ridden by various characters. Hippogriffs have been brought to a wider audience in recent years through their depiction in the fiction of J. K. Rowling.
