Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item; perhaps modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: English hippotame , hippopotamus n.
Etymology: Probably an alteration of hippotame, variant of hippopotamus n. (compare α. forms at that entry), after either ancient Greek ἱππόδαμος hippodame n.2 or the name of Hippodamia (ancient Greek Ἱπποδάμεια ), wife of Pelops (see note); with the sense compare earlier hippopotamus n. 2.In Greek mythology Pelops won the hand of Hippodamia in a chariot race, with the aid of Poseidon (Neptune in Roman mythology), god of the sea. The story of Hippodamia is popular in early modern English literature.
Probably: a mythical creature with the head, neck, shoulders, and forelegs of a horse and a body ending in the tail of a fish or dolphin; = hippocamp n.Only in or with reference to Spenser's Faerie Queene. In some later editions glossed simply as hippopotamus; cf. hippopotamus n. 2.

1758 J. Upton in E. Spenser Faerie Queene II. 486/1 There is something humorous in Spenser's grooping these fantastical beings thus together: Hippodames are sea-horses.
1972 Stud. Eng. Lit. 12 28 Two full stanzas [of the Faerie Queene] are spent in describing Neptune and his Hippodames.

Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἱππόδαμος.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἱππόδαμος horse-tamer < ἱππο- hippo- comb. form + δαμᾶν to tame (see tame adj.).
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
A person who tames or trains horses; a horse-breaker. Cf. hippodamist n.
