Etymology: < histo- comb. form + compatibility n. Compare later histocompatible adj.
The condition that permits transplantation of tissue or organs between individuals, resulting from sufficient similarity of certain cell-surface antigens to prevent destruction of the transplant by the host's immune system. Frequently attributive. Cf. compatibility n. 2b.
